SoulTrain Sheffield: A Monthly Celebration of Soul at Factory Floor, Kelham Island

Soultrain Sheffield

In the heart of Sheffield’s vibrant Kelham Island district, a bespoke music event has been quietly transforming occasional Sunday afternoons into soulful celebrations.

Hosted at the industrial-chic Factory Floor Bar in Kelham, the SoulTrain Sheffield event has become a cherished ritual for music lovers, dancers, and those simply seeking a good vibe to end their weekend.

Curated by boxing legend and passionate soul music fan Johnny Nelson MBE in collaboration with local DJ veteran DJ Chunky, SoulTrain is not just another night out, it's a full-bodied experience of music, movement, and connection.

Held on occasional sunday afternoons, this daytime event strikes the perfect balance between nostalgia and now, blending golden-age grooves with modern soul influences in one of Sheffield’s most characterful venues.

The Venue: Factory Floor: Industrial Roots, Modern Vibe

Soultrain Sheffield - Location: 92 Burton Road, Sheffield S3 8BX

Located at 92 Burton Road in Sheffield, Factory Floor is an integral part of Kelham Island’s cultural revival.

This former industrial warehouse has been re-imagined as a contemporary venue without sacrificing its rugged charm. Expect to see exposed brickwork, polished concrete, and with metal beams and rsj's that frame a warm, open space that feels both urban and welcoming, all perfect for an afternoon of dancing and mingling.

Factory Floor also prioritises sustainability and local sourcing.

Their bar is stocked with small-batch spirits infused with homegrown herbs and features craft beers brewed just next door at the famous Neepsend Brewery

The space smells of citrus zest, fresh hops, and the faint aroma of something exciting just beginning, a fitting backdrop for a soulful gathering.

The Soundtrack: A Journey Through Funk, Soul and Beyond

Music is the heartbeat of SoulTrain Sheffield. DJ Chunky, alongside a rotating cast of guest DJs (including Tony Barraclough, known as Tony B), curates a sonic journey that transcends generations.

You’ll hear everything from Motown and 70s funk to 90s R&B, disco, house, and hip-hop classics, all tied together by their shared rhythm and soul.

Whether it’s a Stevie Wonder singalong or a forgotten gem from a dusty vinyl crate, (think of maybe "You and Me Tonight" by Aurra, and "Put Your Hands Together" by D Mob) the playlist is chosen with purpose.

Far from being just background music, the usual two hour DJ sets are immersive and dynamic.

Tracks blend seamlessly as the energy ebbs and flows, keeping the Sheffield crowd on their feet or swaying with closed eyes and smiling faces.

Every beat, every drop, and every chorus is met with appreciation by a crowd that genuinely feels the music.

The Crowd: United by Groove

What sets SoulTrain Sheffield apart is its community. This isn’t your average club night filled with rigid dress codes and exclusionary vibes.

Here, people of all backgrounds, ages, and levels of dance skill gather with one thing in common: a love for good music and good people.

Dress code is smart and mixed, casual or dressed-to-impress, want to spend the day in some funky flares or a suit with a hat? Its your choice!

Birthday groups toast with cocktails while solo dancers take over the floor with infectious energy.

Couples share close moments during slower numbers. Friends laugh over shared memories when a track from the past hits.

SoulTrain Sheffield is more than an event, it's a space where strangers become friends, and everyone is invited to take part.

Inspired by a Legacy

The name "SoulTrain" is no accident. It’s a nod to the iconic American TV music show that ran from 1971 to 2006, showcasing Black music, dance, and fashion while breaking barriers and celebrating joy.

You can read more about the original Soultrain TV show here

Sheffield’s SoulTrain pays homage to that spirit, not by copying it, but by continuing its legacy: inclusive, rhythm-driven, and unapologetically joyful.

Just like the original Soul Train, this event is about celebration. It’s about lifting each other up through music, embracing individuality, and creating shared moments of happiness on and off the dance floor.

Why Soul Still Matters

In an era of algorithm-driven music streaming and fast-paced nightlife, there’s something grounding about SoulTrain Sheffield.

It reminds us of the emotional power of music, and how it connects us, heals us, and brings us back to ourselves.

Disco, Funk, and Soul music has always been about storytelling, emotion, and honesty. And at Factory Floor in Sheffield, those values shine through every record spun and every dance move thrown.

There’s no pretension here. No velvet ropes or VIP booths. Just a space where you can show up as you are, be moved by the beat, and feel part of something timeless and beautiful.

It’s the kind of atmosphere that sticks with you, the kind that keeps you coming back whenever a new event is planned.

Beyond the Dancefloor

While the music is the main draw, SoulTrain is as much about community as it is rhythm.

Conversations spark easily. People linger at the bar, swap stories, and make plans to meet again.

It’s a perfect setting for reconnecting with old friends or making new ones. It’s also become a regular destination for Sheffield creatives, artists, and professionals who want something authentic and uplifting to round off the month.

The event usually runs in the afternoon through early evening (expect the event time to be around 4pm to 10pm typically), making it ideal for those who want a social fix without the Monday hangover.

You’ll leave feeling refreshed, recharged, and probably humming an old favorite melody all the way home.

What to Expect At Each Event

While the format stays consistent, each Sheffield SoulTrain event has its own flavour. Occasionally, themed nights or live vocal performances add a new dimension.

Guest DJs bring their unique twists, sometimes focusing on specific subgenres or eras. But the core ethos, good people, great music, joyful energy, remains rock solid.

You can usually find event details on Skiddle, where tickets are released in advance. They’re reasonably priced and tend to sell out fast, so planning ahead is wise.

You can also follow Factory Floor or SoulTrain Sheffield on Instagram and Facebook for updates, DJ lineups, and behind-the-scenes sneak peeks.

Looking Ahead

As Sheffield continues to evolve, SoulTrain is helping shape its cultural identity in a new, meaningful way.

It’s bridging generations, blending traditions, and showing that nightlife doesn't have to mean staying out until 3 or 4 a.m. in a packed club.

It can be soulful, grounding, and still leave room for Monday morning coffee, work and emails.

With a growing fan base and word-of-mouth buzz, SoulTrain Sheffield could very well become a national example of how to do things differently, teaching us how to party with purpose, soul, and style.
