Manufactured direct by Hyundai this petrol chain saw is aimed at the home user / light trade user.

As you would expect from Hyundai Power Products the HYC 6220 model is manufactured to a very high standard offering a strong cutting performance whether you are using it to cut or prune trees, cut logs up for firewood, or for use in a building or landscaping project.

Unlike other low-cost chainsaws this particular model is fitted with a decent sized chain bar and cutting blade, as standard equipment the Hyundai HYC6220 chain saw is fitted with a 20" bar giving it a really good sized cutting capacity.

Most petrol chainsaws of this low price point usually are fitted with a 10", 12", or 14" bar, with this model having a large 20" bar and chain it allows the user to tackle larger diameter logs and tree sections from the outset.

Keeping the cutting chain / blade in good order

This petrol chain saw is fitted with automatic chain lubrication feature, with this component delivering the right amounts of chain oil to its blade as it is used. Having auto-chain lubrication takes the guess work out of deciding when and how much oil to use to keep the saw blade freely running as well as in a good condition.

This feature also helps maintain the chainbar and chain drive sprocket too.

Increased comfort when used for prolonged periods of time

Another great feature on this inexpensive priced chain saw is its anti-vibration mounting system on its handles.

The handles on the Hyundai HYC6220 petrol chain saw are designed to reduce vibration from the saw to the operator whilst it is being used, increasing the level of comfort as well as assisting with safety.

If you have ever used a chainsaw (petrol or electric) that doesn't have any anti-vibration mounts to its handles and controls you will soon see what a good benefit it is by having them on this model.

Fitted with a safety kick-back device as standard equipment

Although this is a feature that is standard on most chainsaws these days, it is good to note that this Hyundai petrol chain saw has a safety kick-back device.

Otherwise often referred to as a chain brake, this component stops the rotating chain blade virtually instantly in the event of a kick back.

High powered two stroke petrol engine

This individual tool is fitted with a high powered 2-stroke 62cc petrol engine. This runs on a fuel mixture of unleaded petrol (gasoline if you are reading this article in the USA) and 2 stroke oil. 2 stroke chainsaw oil needs to be premixed with unleaded petrol and used in this chain saw.

The 2 stroke oil that is mixed with the fuel serves to lubricate the important parts of the chain saws engine components, namely its piston, piston rings, and the cylinder / barrel. The fuel to oil ratio required for the Hyundai HYC6220 is 40:1

The engine is straight forward and easy to start having a manual choke control as well as the usual fuel primer pump control. Due to it being fitted with a large (hence powerful) 62cc engine it also has a decompression control to help with starting from cold too.

Procedure for starting the engine

The way to start the engine on this low priced petrol chainsaw is relatively straight forward.

With regards to when the tools engine is totally cold the procedure is:-

  • Check that the saw is filled with the correct fuel (unleaded petrol and two stroke oil)
  • Check that the chain oil level is good (chain lubricating oil)
  • Check that the chain is correctly fitted on its bar and tensioned correctly
  • Check that the chain is in good condition, is sharp, and not excessively worn
  • Ensure that any children or pets are kept away from the work area
  • Ensure that you are wearing the correct PPE
  • Turn the ignition control to its on position
  • Push on the front chain brake lever to activate the saws chain brake
  • Pull the choke control fully out
  • Prime the tools carburettor by pressing the primer bulb at least 8 times
  • Press the decompression valve control in
  • With the chainsaw on firm and flat ground, hold the saw safely and firmly down (by placing your right foot through the rear handle, the saw facing away from you, and by firmly grasping the front handle with your left hand) and pull the recoil handle swiftly. It may take several pulls before the tools engine fires-up.
  • Once the engine has started, push the choke control fully in
  • Disengage the chain brake device by pushing the lever in backwards, away from the saws blade
  • Warm the chainsaws engine up by running the speed at half throttle for around 20 seconds
Starting the HYC 6220's engine from hot:-

The above steps need to be taken to start-up the engine on this Hyundai chainsaw when it is already hot, with the exception of the choke control does not need to be used, the primer bulb will not require pressing, and the decompression valve will not need activating.
